Renault showcased the Kwid with a host of new upgrades at the Expo. The biggest news is under the hood. A 1.0-litre engine will join the Kwid’s line-up in a few months from now to take on the Maruti Alto K10 and Hyundai Eon 1.0.
The new 4-cylinder engine gets four valves per cylinder in the DOHC layout. Renault hasn’t revealed outputs yet but expect it to take on the Alto and Eon here with around 65-70bhp of power and 100Nm of torque. Renault also plans to introduce a new AMT gearbox based on the current 5-speed manual unit.
The Kwid has been a highly successful product for Renault. In just four months after its launch, Renault has received over one lakh bookings for the nippy little hatchback and waiting periods now extend to around six months depending on the variant. The Kwid offers excellent efficiency, space, features and style at an aggressive price point. This combination has struck a chord with the first time Indian car buyer.
Renault also showcased two concept spin offs of the Kwid called the kwid climber and Kwid racer. Tomorrow, Renault will showcase the Duster facelift at the expo.
