This Indian bound Maruti Suzuki car gets a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating

Maruti Suzuki’s latest India bound vehicle, the Ignis has received a 5 star Euro NCAP rating in its crash tests. The Ignis, which is set to make its debut in India sometime next year, was tested by the Euro NCAP and has fared rather well. The multiple crumple zones in the body as well as the driver and passenger airbag allowed it to perform well in full frontal impact tests.

The car which was tested by the Euro NCAP was fitted with optional safety pack which includes front and side airbags, lane assist system and an autonomous pedestrian warning system which slows down the car or brakes the car automatically if it detects a pedestrian appears suddenly in front of the car without any inputs from the driver.

The other Ignis that the Euro NCAP tested wasn’t fitted with the optional safety pack and that vehicle got a 3 star rating, which is still good compared to its Indian rivals. This Ignis gets front and side airbags but misses out on the radar guided pedestrian warning system and lane assist.

The Euro NCAP has been testing Indian car safety for a while now and brought to light the dismal, outdated standards of safety in vehicles in our country. They are European car safety test programme based in Belgium and were founded in 1997. They are an independent union who are responsible to test the safety aspect of every vehicle which will arrive on the European shores to see if those vehicles are road worthy or a risk. The Ignis doing so well is a good sign for the Indian market, showing that manufacturers are now prioritising safety over cost of production.
