Google and Ford could build self-driving cars together

Google and Ford are planning to create a joint venture to develop and build self-driving cars. They could announce the deal in next month at the Consumer Electronics Trade Show in Las Vegas according to a report in Yahoo Autos. Rumours of Google and Ford being ‘in talks’ have also been doing the rounds and the parties have been negotiating on a contract manufacturing deal for a long time. If these rumuors are true, it makes perfect sense because such a union can be a huge upside for both parties.

If such a partnership is possible, it could be beneficial for both companies as Google has progressed considerably in self-driving technology and Ford’s skills at car making can’t be questioned. Google’s aggressive push into autonomous car software and computing in a car built by Ford will bring together the best of both worlds.

Google spokesman said the company would not comment on speculation but Google officials confirmed that the company is talking to automakers.

Ford spokesman Alan Hall neither confirmed nor denied a possible deal. But he quoted on ‘FORTUNE’ – “We have been and will continue working with many companies and discussing a variety of subjects related to our Ford Smart Mobility plan. We keep these discussions private for obvious competitive reasons, and we do not comment on speculation.”
