Mercedes-Benz GLS 400 launched

Mercedes-Benz India today announced the launch of its eighth car this year; the petrol powered GLS 400 with a price tag of Rs 82.9 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Currently brought onto our shores as a CBU, the GLS 400 will be manufactured locally in the country by the end of this year.

Mated to a 9-speed gearbox, the GLS 400 is powered by a 3-litre V6 petrol unit that churns out 328bhp of power and 489Nm of torque. Over 5-metre long, this 2435kg SUV can sprint to 100kmph in 6.6 seconds. The top speed is limited at 240kmph.

Being the S-Class of SUVs, as Mercedes-Benz likes to call it, it comes loaded with a host of features such as a panoramic sunroof, LED headlamps, all-wheel drive system, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, Apple CarPlay and a 14 speaker Harman Kardon stereo system. The GLS also gets five driving modes to choose from – Comfort, Sport, Slippery, Individual and Off-Road. It is also packed with safety features such as six airbags, ESP, ABS with brake assist and electronic crumple zones.

Speaking at the event, Roland Folger, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India commented, “With the launch of the GLS 400 4MATIC, we have now completed our petrol portfolio for the Indian market. The introduction of the GLS 400 4MATIC is a strategic move as it gives the customers the flexibility to choose between the petrol and the diesel variants of their popular SUV. This is also the fifth SUV variant we introduced this year, further bolstering our SUV portfolio which remains the most comprehensive in the luxury car segment. Our SUV segment has seen the maximum growth for the past two years and we are confident that this trend will continue.”

The GLS 400 makes a compelling case for itself as it is expensive by only Rs 1 lakh than its diesel counterpart. Another positive has to be that there’s no direct competition from any of its major rivals as none of them offer a petrol option at this point of time.
