Ford pulls the wraps off its limited edition GT Carbon Series supercar

Ford unveiled its made-to-order GT Carbon Series model and the company claims that it is the lightest model among its GT versions. The supercar sheds approximately 18kg due to extensive use of carbon fibre for wheels, titanium for exhaust and wheel nuts and polycarbonate for rear hatch, similar to the Le Mans winning cup car.

The limited edition model has more carbon fibre than any of the previous models. Carbon fibre is used in the lower body work and A-pillars. The exposed carbon fibre stripes along the entire length of the car are available in four colour accents; the same colour will be used for the wing mirror covers and brake calipers.  On the inside, Ford has ditched the cup holders and storage bins on the driver’s side and introduced carbon fibre door sills. Air conditioning units and SYNC 3 connectivity system are retained. The seats are also new and the car gets anodised aluminium paddle shifters.

On the unveil of the limited edition GT, Hermann Salenbauch, global director, Ford Performance said, “The Ford GT Carbon Series will stand out on the road with its striking, carbon-fibre-rich design and on the track with its athleticism. It is yet another example of how we can bring to life our Le Mans-winning supercar in new and exciting ways so our customer can share in that magical legacy.”

Mechanically the car remains the same, with the 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo EcoBoost engine with intercooler which makes 638bhp at 6250rpm and 745.7Nm at 5900rpm. The engine is matched to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox integrated into the lightweight rear suspension. Top speed of the car is north of 340kmph.

The Ford GT Carbon Series is available to order for select global markets. Ford says only one model is built each week. The company will open its final owner application process for select markets around the globe on November 8. The GT Carbon Series comes after the company had made an announcement earlier that it would make additional 350 units of the GT apart from the 1000 units already planned. Despite its high price, the supercar remains popular among enthusiasts internationally.
