Five things a rider (single) can do on Valentine’s Day

It’s that time of the year again, when everyone is out with their significant others canoodling on the roads and breaking the bank. Social media is a-flurry with posts that make you stomach squirm and that smell of a corporate fuelled marketing frenzy wafts through the air. Quite simply, we don’t understand it. We’d rather spend our time covered in grease tinkering on our motorcycle or better yet be out on the twisties, trying to get down on one knee. Pun-intended. This year why not do just that. Being a rider means that your bike is as much – if not more – important to you as your soul mate. You spend your time maintaining it, you shower it with adoration even the odd-cuddle might be thrown in (although we’ll probably never admit it!). So why not spend this valentine’s with the one girl in your life, you know, will never let you down. Let the only thing getting a new ring this V-day be your piston.

1 Go on a long (or short) motorcycle ride

Time it right. Sunrise is the best time to be wherever you want to be, so make sure you clear city and the rush well in advance. Since it’s a Sunday one can even consider an afternoon ride out, to watch the sun set. Although, We’d advice sunrise so as to beat the hordes of couples crawling out of the wood work at every picturesque location taking selfies and conducting oral inspections in the bushes. Rides are a great way to meet new interesting people, you never know, you might just meet someone who shares your wavelength.

2 Treat your motorcycle as your valentine

Take her out, get her machine washed, waxed and get that Teflon coating you’ve been promising yourself to get her. Change the oil, get new filters and by all means pamper her. Because she will appreciate it, and you will be in turn rewarded for your efforts. Consider it a spa day for your special girl and when you take her out that evening all eyes will be on her, and you will love it.

3 Join a motorcycle riding group

Whether you are a new rider or a more experienced one, there are many reasons why one (rider) should join motorcycle riding club.

You can gain the experience of riding a motorcycle in the safe environment, if you choose the right club. You get encouraged to practice some newly acquired riding skills in the group which will help you boost your confidence to a certain level. Riding in groups will sharpen your awareness and will teach you to pick up practical and safe tips. Every group or club offers a specific purpose with different personalities, with different motorcycles. So, yes above all discovery of great routes and tours and a great story to brag about at your office or college on weekdays. And indeed a good way to spend your Valentine’s Day instead of feeling left out or alone or ‘single’.

4 Gift yourself riding gear

Have you ever wondered why MotoGP riders get up from the accidents looking more disappointed than dead? Do you think the track is made of couch cushions or something like that? No, it’s because they wear full safety gear.

Valentine’s Day isn’t necessarily meant to fall in love with another person, but with yourself. Gift some safety gear to yourself. Safety gears may not be convenient or make you feel cool, but it is the stuff that keeps you safe.

5 Accessorize your bike

Touring on a motorcycle can be a challenge if the ride is too long. There’s always more luggage than you can carry in a bag pack and here is where a good pair of saddle bags comes in really handy. There are plenty of varieties to choose from in terms of size and material. Saddle bags are perfect for cross-country touring but if you have plans for an overnighter, an aerodynamic tank-bag or tail-bag should be ideal.

Get a windshield and hand guard fitted to your motorcycle if the weather you are going to be riding in is harsh. The last thing you want is a frozen hand on the throttle or a chill creeping up your chest.
