Private vehicles are going to be banned in the university campus, said W N Gade, vice-chancellor, Pune University in a press conference. He said that he envisions pollution free environment in the varsity.

There are already two six-seaters, one solar powered and the other battery-operated, that are operational and within 45 days two more six-seaters will be procured along with 14-seater automobiles. There are six pickup points in the campus for the vehicles and a huge parking lot will be created once the entire infrastructure is made available for bicycles and battery-operated vehicles, he said.

He added that even bicycles will be acquired using funds available under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. These bicycles will be used and parked at various places within the campus for others to use

The press conference is held every year on the university’s foundation day to declare the annual Jeevan Gaurav Awards that the university gives to people who have excelled in their respective fields.
