Volkswagen plans global deployment of 1.5-litre TDI engine

Volkswagen is planning to introduce the 1.5-litre TDI engine globally in a number of Volkswagen Group cars. This engine will be the same downsized version of the 1.6-litre TDI unit that was engineered for the Indian market. The 1.5-litre unit develops 103bhp of power and 250Nm of torque.

In 2014, VW introduced the new 1.5-litre engine in the Polo. The 1.5 features a smaller bore, hence dropping the engine capacity by 100cc. This allowed the diesel Polo and Vento to qualify for small car excise benefits. The move has turned around fortunes for VW in India as sales have picked up since. In January 2015, Volkswagen started production of this diesel engine at its Chakan plant with a capacity to produce 98,000 engines per year. A lot of this unused capacity can be diverted towards exports.

Australian automotive website Motoring reports that Volkswagen’s core small petrol and diesel engines will share the same 1.5-litre capacity according to Volkswagen brand CEO Dr. Herbert Diess. The 1.5-litre petrol engine in question is the 1.4-litre TSI’s larger version that will reportedly debut in the Volkswagen Golf 7 facelift this year. Both engines will then be deployed in small cars from sister brands – Skoda, Seat and possibly Audi for its new generation of compact cars.
