Volkswagen launches 2018 Polo GTI globally

Volkswagen launched the 2018 Polo GTI on December 4, 2017, a performance hatch based on the sixth generation Polo, both of which are based on Volkswagen’s versatile MQB platform. The platform is a common platform for a variety of different cars which is commonly designed so that the cars share the same front axle, pedal box and engine positioning despite varying wheelbase, track and external dimensions.  The 2018 Polo GTI is a five door hatch unlike its predecessor which had three doors.

The 2018 Polo GTI is powered by the EA888 2.0-litre four cylinder direct injection turbo-petrol engine mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox. The engine is also used in many other performance Volkswagens including the Golf GTI. Unlike the Golf GTI which produces 227bhp of maximum power, the Polo GTI produces a slightly lesser 197bhp though. The new Polo GTI develops 8bhp more than its predecessor and can sprint from 0-100kmph in 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 237kmph.

The 2018 Polo GTI sits 15mm lower than the car it replaces. The car is available in two variants, one with a standard sport mode and second one with an optional sport select mode. The Polo GTI gets standard 17-inch alloys, an optional 18-inch alloys, rear spoiler and twin exhausts. The car is launched globally is priced at 23,875 Euros, which roughly translates to Rs 18.1 lakh (excluding customs and imports).

There is no firm news of when Volkswagen will bring the new Polo GTI to Indian shores though it is safe to assume that the performance hatch will be close followed by the normal Polo.
