Goodyear’s EfficientGrip tyre is aimed at soft-roaders and premium SUVs, its modern construction promising to reduce noise while improving aspects such as handling, braking and fuel economy. We first used a set of these on the Audi Q3 during our epic QuattroXpedition and found them impressive. Impressive enough for me to get them fitted to my Mitsubishi Pajero. The first thing I noticed was the reduced hum, thanks to the increased number of block pitches that reduce harmonics, usually associated with SUV tyres. The Pajero was particularly prone to humming on the previous set of tyres that I was using. Meanwhile, a more road biased pattern has improved ride quality with the tyres feeling more responsive and stable over potholes and other road irregularities. I’ve also noticed that the initial turn-in is a little sharper. Fuel economy has improved as well, but only slightly. We haven’t had a chance to put the tyres through their paces completely yet. Over the next few months we will be evaluating their performance in wet and dry conditions, along with off-road ability and also if the EfficientGrip tyres stay as quiet as they are when new. Stay tuned for further updates.
