Tata Tiago based compact sedan christened Tigor

Tata Motors had showcased a compact sedan at the 2016 Auto Expo based on the Tiago hatchback code named Kite 5. It has now been christened ‘Tigor’, and comes with a new term called ‘styleback’, which is Tata’s nomenclature for a sub-4 metre notchback. It has been clearly inspired by design cues from recent Jaguar sedans (certainly not a bad thing), especially in the rear profile.

The Tigor is expected to share most of its mechanicals as well as design elements with the Tiago hatch. The coupe-like roofline blends well into the sub 4-metre design without looking disproportionate. The Kite 5 concept  had an additional wheelbase of 50mm over the Tiago and if it makes to the production car, expect the legroom to be more than that on the Tiago. Even the features, including the ConnectNext infotainment system shall make it to the Tigor and Tata could also offer a touchscreen in the top-end variant.

The Tiago is offered with the choice of both, petrol and diesel powertrains. The petrol 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Revotron engine churns out 84bhp and 11Nm of torque while the 1047cc, 3-cylinder Revotorq diesel engine makes 69bhp and 140Nm. Both the engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Expect similar configuration on the Tigor as well. However, the Nexon (Tata’s upcoming crossover) is also likely to be offered with a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol and we expect it to be offered as an option on the Tigor in the near future.

Having spotted the Nexon as well as the Tigor in their test mule avatar around Pune city, expect both to go on sale sometime this year.
