Tata Nexon spied on the outskirts of Pune

We spotted Tata’s upcoming crossover, the Nexon on the outskirts of Pune today which was first showcased in 2014 Auto Expo. Looking at the test mule, the design is definitely a radical change as compared to the existing Tata cars.

With a coupe-like roof line, the Nexon is designed to be a crossover and thus gets a jacked up suspension to offer maximum ground clearance. Even the wide section tyres are well fitted in to the wheel arches to the hilt. The front resembles the Hexa with the toothed grille and hexagonal headlamps, while the rear is slightly ‘funkier’; flanked by angular tail lamps and a faux diffuser.

The Nexon is expected to be powered by an in-house 1.5-litre diesel engine (scaled up from the Tiago) and a turbocharged variant of the 1.2-litre petrol, again from the Tiago which is expected to make power in the range of 110bhp. Both the engines are expected to be offered with the option of automatic gearbox.

On the inside, expect the Nexon to come a well-laid out dashboard along with a mounted touchscreen. Even driving modes, a la Zest are expected to make it to the production variant.

The Nexon is an important product for the Indian carmaker as the domestic market has welcomed crossovers/mini-SUVs with open arms. Expect it to launch sometime later this year.
