Mercedes-Benz GLC launched at Rs 50.7 lakh

Mercedes-Benz just launched the newest SUV in its portfolio, the GLC, in the Indian market. The GLC comes with two engine options — a 2143cc diesel and 1991cc petrol. The  diesel GLC 220 d, is priced at Rs 50.7 lakh and the petrol engined GLC 300 is priced marginally higher at Rs 50.9 lakh. (both prices ex-showroom, Pune)
The GLC is the first SUV in its segment from Mercedes-Benz and is based on the same platform as the C-Class, though it has been stretched by 33mm. From the front, the car looks like a C-Class on stilts and is rather handsome-looking. It gets twin tailpipes at the rear and taillamps reminiscent of the GT S. The interiors have been lifted straight out of the C-Class as well, which is great because the current C-Class interiors are a notch above its rivals.
Both engines come mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The diesel engined GLC makes 170bhp and 400Nm of torque, and does the sprint to 100kmph in 8.9 seconds. The petrol GLC makes 245bhp and 370Nm of torque, and goes from 0-100kmph in 6.9 seconds. It also comes with five driving modes — Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.
All India spec GLCs come with an off-road package as standard and this means in addition to the all-wheel drive system, you get hill decent control, three off-road driving modes (Off-road, slippery and incline) and an additional 20mm ground clearance. It doesn’t get a dynamic suspension so driving modes only change steering, engine and transmission responsiveness.
The GLC is also a rather safe car. It scored a full five stars at the Euro NCAP, and has all sorts of features in place to keep occupants safe like a total of seven airbags, ABS, ESP, attention assist (to make sure you don’t fall asleep at the wheel) and adaptive brake lights and headlights.
The GLC will be sold in the country for the moment as a CBU only. It has the potential to be an extremely popular product in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio, as it fills the large gap that existed between the GLA and the GLE.
