Hyundai India has launched the sixth-generation Elantra today at an introductory starting price of Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The saloon is available in 3 trims, with both diesel and petrol engines.

The new Elantra gets an all-new 2-litre engine, replacing the old 1.8-litre unit. It makes 150bhp and 196Nm of torque. The 1.6-litre diesel unit however, has been carried over from the old car, which also does duty on the Creta and makes 126bhp and 265Nm of torque. Both the engines are available with either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic options.

The saloon follows Hyundai’s evolved fluidic design language and has the best in class drag coefficient of 0.29, thus making it aerodynamically superior and more efficient, overall. The front is dominated by a huge grille, a la Creta, although with broader air scoops and a much more sculpted bonnet. While on the inside, the Elantra gets an 8-inch touchscreen based infotainment system, electric sunroof, push start-stop button and aluminium pedals as standard. There is also a unique feature that lets the owner open the trunk automatically if the key is within range for a period of three seconds. On the safety front, it gets 6 airbags, ABS+EBD, traction control and hill assist as standard.

The Elantra goes up against the likes of Skoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla Altis, Chevrolet Cruze and Volkswagen Jetta.
