Fifth generation Discovery launched, starting at Rs. 71.38 lakh

The hardcore Land Rover Discovery has been finally launched in India at a starting price of Rs 71.38 lakh (ex-showroom). In its fifth generation, the Disco has received major updates over its predecessor.

In terms of design, the Discovery gets several elements from the Range Rover, especially the front. The rear remains boxy (Discovery’s forte) but the overall silhouette of the mammoth SUV is slick and modern. The split rear door from the previous model is replaced by an inner load floor that folds out when the tailgate opens and it has a capacity to hold 300kgs of weight. Wheel base is increased by 38mm over the last model.

The power gets a rise of nearly 9bhp from its diesel predecessor and is 20 per cent lighter. All the five variants come with petrol and diesel options. The petrol mill is a 3.0-litre V6 turbo which produces 335bhp and 450Nm of torque, while the 3.0-litre V6 diesel mill produces 254bhp and 600Nm of torque. The powertrains are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission which delivers power to all four wheels.

The luxury SUV comes with a lot of tech goodies like the in control touch system with a six-speaker Land Rover sound system, park assist, surround 360° camera, intelligent seat fold system and up to and up to 9 USB ports. It boasts of a 900mm of wading depth, gesture control to open tailgate, dual sunroof and the optional terrain response 2. The higher spec HSE trim gets the in control touch pro with 10-inch touch screen and 380W meridian sound system with 10 speakers, the optional features include the activity key, HUD, and ATPC. Driver aids include the driver pro pack, DSC, HDC and EPAS come standard across the board.

“The All-New seven seats Discovery distinguishes itself from most of its competition on its design appeal, intelligent versatility, enabling technology and a host of capability related features,” said Rohit Suri, president and managing director of Jaguar Land Rover India.

The Discovery comes in five variants – the base trim S, SE, HSE, HSE luxury and the First Edition, which is the range topping variant. The top-end First edition diesel costs a whopping Rs 1.08 crore.

The big Range Rover goes up against the likes of Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7 and BMW X5. The Ed drove the Discovery recently and you can read his first impressions here.
