Ferrari J50 showcased in Tokyo

The limited edition Ferrari J50 was revealed at the National Art Center in Tokyo recently, to commemorate Ferrari’s 50 years in Japan. The two-seater roadster has regained the carbon-fibre hard targa top which is divided into two pieces, to stow away behind the seats, a style back from 1970s and 1980s Ferrari cars. The J50 is the result of Ferrari’s Special Projects department and Styling Centre team based in Maranello. Built in the spirit of Ferrari’s fuori serie tradition, only 10 units of the supercar will be built, which will be tailored as per customer’s requirements.

The J50 is based on the 488 Spyder and thus it is powered by the same 3.9-litre V8 engine which delivers 670bhp of maximum power. The frame of the engine is a transparent polycarbonate cover which is shaped to provide a visual extension of the two separate roll hoops protecting the heads of driver and the co-driver, resembling a helmet’s visor. While the exterior is all new, apart from the 20” forged rims which are specifically designed for the J50, the slanted top edge that continues with the windscreen and the raked black swage line rises from the low-set nose. This ceases out at the air intake aft makes the J50 a very low-slung roadster to sum-up Ferrari’s values of nimbleness and agility.

Unlike Ferrari’s legendary models such as the GTO, F40 and F50, the J50 incorporates a window graphic, the black dividing line; below the knee height is an altered beltline which is at a much lower height transforming the J50 into a barchetta, reminiscent of the 1950 Ferraris. With the redesigned front bumper, the radiators have been placed closely together, the lowered windscreen header rail allows more air flow over the aero foil and consequently over the rear spoiler as well.
