BMW expands its SUV range with the X2

BMW first showcased the X2 as a concept at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and in just about a year the company has revealed the production version. Slotted between the entry-level X1 and Q5 competitor, X3, the X2 caters to younger buyers, says BMW.

The X2 promises to be a more fun and sporty option over the X1. Despite having the same underpinnings and wheelbase as the X1, the X2 is shorter by 2cm in length, sits 7cm lower to the ground, has a low-slung coupe like roofline and has shorter overhangs which give it a more crossover-ish appeal. The signature kidney grille at the front surprisingly has an inverted arrangement; it is wider at the base and narrow at the top. And the rear spoiler besides reducing the drag, also enhances the sporty look of the car.

Looking at the pictures, the cabin is typical BMW, featuring a driver focused layout with Alcantara finish. At the centre of the dash sits a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and smartphone integration capabilities. The central console is old-school and features several buttons over the new-age touchscreen panels.

At the launch the X2 will be available in three trims – standard, M Sport and M Sport X models. And there will be three powertrain options to choose from including xDrive20i with 189bhp, xDrive20d with 187bhp and xDrive25d with 228bhp. While from early next year BMW will include the sDrive18i, the xDrive20i, the sDrive18d and the xDrive18d powertrain options as well.

BMW hasn’t revealed any details as to when will the X2 arrive on our shores but looking at the current affinity of Indian buyers towards SUVs, it is expected to make it to India soon.
