2016 Toyota Fortuner launched at Rs. 31.12 lakh

The much awaited new generation Toyota Fortuner is finally launched in India at Rs. 31.12 lakh (Ex-Showroom Delhi). It is based on the new IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose vehicle) platform that uses the ladder on frame chassis, lighter than the existing Fortuner and underpinning the Innova Crysta. The new generation Fortuner will sport completely new exteriors and premium interiors, a petrol variant for the first time, the bookings of which have already commenced. Besides ABS and airbags as standard in all the variants, it will be offered with LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs and a roof mounted rear spoiler.

The Fortuner will be powered by a 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder in-line GD series diesel engine with Variable Nozzle turbocharger, that churns out 174bhp at 3400 rpm amd 420Nm of torque at 2000 rpm in the 6-speed manual gearbox equipped variant and it makes 450Nm in the automatic. For the first time, there will be a petrol variant too which will come with a 2.7-litre Dual VVTi 4-cylinder 16-valve engine that churns out 163bhp at 5200rpm and 245Nm of torque 4000rpm. Both the engines will be mated to manual and automatic transmission options. The diesel transmission options being, 6MT with iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission which essentially rev-matches between gears) and 6AT (Sequential Shift + Paddle Shift), while the petrol one will come with 5MT/6AT (6AT with Sequential shift + Paddle Shift) option. With that, the diesel variant will come with an option of 2WD or the 4WD (with a 2WD switch) accordingly and for the petrol, the power will be sent to the rear wheels only.

The SUV has got a better quality of materials, equipped with a lot of utility based features, which includes faux-leather upholstery for seats, four-spoke steering wheel with audio and telephone controls on it, TFT multi-information display, navigation turn display on MID and touch screen audio with capacitive switches. Other features include 4WD with high and low range, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, downhill assist control, traction control and drive modes.

The SUV looks promising in its premium avatar and will compete with the likes of Ford Endeavor, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Hyundai Santa Fe. The Fortuner has been a hugely successful SUV for Toyota and has been the segment leader for years by a considerable margin. This time around though, the competition is stiffer and the new Fortuner is pricier. Will it be as easy as the last time? We try to answer that and more with the review of the new Fortuner. Click here for the review.
